It was winter in the 80's, my future Mom was out getting drinks with her girlfriends and the most delicious looking character walked into the bar. She was instantly attracted to the how vibrant he appeared how his skin seemed to glisten and when he walked passed, he smelled - like wild cherries! He noticed her too, he bought her a drink and several hours later my Mom had a passionate and sticky night with a Gummi Bear! Nine months later I was born!
Luckily my genes gave me my Mom's good looks and my Gummi Bear Dad's flexibility. As a child I seemed to be on a constant sugar high and was bouncing here and there and everywhere! Since my bones seemed to be part gelatin I was able to excel in gymnastics and at five years old created my now signature move - The Hopping Splits!
This unique move landed me on The Late Show with David Letterman's segment Stupid Human Tricks. This brief 15 minutes of fame inspired me to combine my love of art with movement. I had received my BFA in Art Education from Kent State University and always dreamt of making it BIG in the art world knowing that to be successful you must do something no one has ever done before...so, I painted my legs and did my Hopping Splits across a canvas in the backyard. The prints that my painted legs left as I bounced across the canvas was my beginning of SPLITS ART!
My paintings began to develop into very interesting artworks. Using a variety of colors, layers, and textures my art was developing and pushing the creative envelope. Soon, I started to incorporate body movements aside from the splits/legs. By adding my love of yoga and dance onto my canvases the depth of imagery and patterns was infinite!
Out of the blue one day, my phone rang, it was a talent scout for America's Got Talent. They said, "We saw you on Letterman and we've seen your website. Can you do what you do in 90 seconds?" At that point in time my paintings took hours to create, but the challenge of making a painting in 90 seconds was something that I had to go for. After brainstorming, the idea of creating the American Flag came to me. I quickly had to create choreography to get from one part of the canvas to the other for the audition. Thankfully my years of dance and gymnastics paid off! My time on America's Got Talent was a blast as I Boom Boom Pow-ed my way across the stage. The judges put me through to Vegas with memorable quotes such as "Beauty is in the thighs of the beholder!" from Howie Mandel and "I'd love to see what else you can do with your thighs!" from Sharon Osborne.
All of the things I loved were suddenly combined into one! Art, dance, flexibility yoga and performing. I had created something new, creative. fun and the beauty of Splits Art began.
Soon I was the main attraction at all sort of art events like Art Basel year after year, Artopia, Addicted to Art, Yoga Socials, and RAWartists Miami Swim Wear Week, Wynnwood Art Walks, Yelp 10 Year Anniversary, ARTundressed and many more. These performances are recorded and I have my opportunity to add in another layer of media by turning my performances in a music/art videos. The videos give the viewers the luxury of watching a 15 minute, 30 minute or even a 3 hour performance art piece in a matter of seconds or mintues with time lapse effects and high energy music.
In 2013, I was awarded the prestigious BEST PERFORMING ARTIST IN MIAMI by RAWartists! In 2014 I was prestigiously chosen to have my artwork showcased inside the Eiffel Tower at La Grande Exposition Universelle curated by Salvatore Russo and Francesco Saverio Russo. I look forward to my other dreams coming true - showing my art in places like the MOMA in NYC, returning to the Late Show with David Letterman as the artistic guest… and maybe even on SNL one day too!!! I welcome the opportunity of SPLITS ART being a house hold name in the in the art industry and seeing how my "Jackson Polluck turned fitness" artworks are received by the world!
